This issue also marks the return of Robot-Master and truths between Megatron and Shockwave.

The bright cover of issue 18 depicts the Decepticon fortress, Darkmount in white with a bright green background. Lord Straxus and Blaster battle it out front and center, over the space bridge with Straxus striking blaster on the head with a mighty swing with what appears to be an energy charged, Axe? Pick axe? War hammer? Blaster fires back at Straxus, with his weapon, missing his intended target. The Transformers logo at the top of the comic is white this time. “BLASTER AND STRAXUX BATTLE…” Hangs just below the Transformers logo in bright Yellow. “…BETWEEN TWO WORLDS!” rests at the bottom of the book, almost center.

The comic opens up on a couple out for a drive through the Columbia River Gorge. Seemingly, out of know were, they come across a large bridge. They discover that the bridge only goes about half way across to the other side. Strange metal creatures appear on the bridge and quickly explode in front of them. The couple flees just in time before the bridge disappears into nothing.

We jump back to Cybertron, where Straxus is upset because the space bridge has returned from earth without being commanded to. Straxus contacts Spanner, a scientist held hostage who designed the space bridge. Spanner is able to identify the flaw that caused the space bridge to return. Straxus has no concerns over the fact one of his own soldiers perished in the test. Blaster is watching the scene unfold in the background, while hunting for Spanner. The space bridge is shut down until repairs can be completed.

From the coal mine on Earth, Donny Finkleberg (a.k.a. Robot-Master) continues to make television broadcasts for the Decepticons to convince the human race that Autobots are evil. Finkleberg complains about his working conditions do Megatron who is getting tired of his complaining.

Shockwave arrives shortly after and he and Megatron argue about who is to leave the Deceoptions. A message from Straxus comes in stating he is planning to open the space bridge. Because of this new information Megatron and Shockwave agree to a truce. Finkleberg feels the need to warn the Autobots.

On Cybertron, the Autobots mount a full scale attack on Darkmount having been unable to located Spanner. With the Decepticons engaged in the battle, Blaster tries to destroy the space bridge. He only hesitates when he discovers that Spanner himself has actually been rebuilt into the space bridge itself. This hesitation allows the Decepticons to discover Blaster and attack him, which stops him from completing his plan.

The bridge activates under Straxus’ orders and battle between the Autobots and Decepticons continues on the bridge. Blaster is able to disable the bridge systems and kicks Straxus over the bridge, killing him. The Autobots flee over the bridge before it disappears stranding the Transformers on earth.

My Thoughts On This Issue

I really like the cover art with this issue. Maybe it’s my nostalgia for this book talking, but I remember this being one of the first Transformers comic books I picked up that day I discovered them at Stamp & Coin. My eyes love the white city with the green background.

The story it’s self takes place mostly in Cybertron. revealing more of the Transformers’ home word. Something that has not been shown since the first issue of the comic.

I don’t have a lot more to add about this issue other than it was solid and the ending really left me wanting more. With these new Autobots from Cybertron, now stuck on earth I am eager to pick up issue 19 and read what happens next.

Transmission Letters This Issue

Dear Transmissions,
TRANSFORMERS #13 was an exceptional comic. The story was great! It was a big change from the usual types of issues. I liked it because it dealt with human emotions. I also enjoyed the small amount of inhumanity thrown in by Megatron after he reverted back to his normal self. The fact that he almost killed the man who revived him shows that he is the best leader for the Decepticons. This is because he doesn’t let feelings stand in the way of victory.
the art in this issue was great also. I especially liked the way that all of the robots were drawn. I hope that the present artist, Don Perlin, Stays on the book forever. the only thing I didn’t like about this issue was that there was no letter column. I hope to see it back in these pages soon!

Dear Sirs,
First, I would like to say that I am 23 years old and have been reading your comics since the late sixties. recently, my eight year=old cousin, Shingo, urged me to read his copy of TRANSFORMERS #13. I hadn’t been reading comics lately and Shingo hoped that this would renew my interest in them. He promised me that it was THE coolest comic available and that it was way cooler than (my old personal favorite) the FANTASTIC FOUR, or any of the other “old” comics that I’d read during my youth. cooler than the FF? That would have to be a pretty impressive book, I thought.
After reading the comic, I was impressed! I told Shingo that TRANSFORMERS was at least as cool as the FF, et. al., if not cooler. Shingo hesitantly agreed (perhaps, sympathetic of my childhood heroes) and we concurred that Marvel’s latest effort is state of the art. Your staff is fantastic!
Keep up the great work, guys, on all of your books. Shingo and I will both be reading your comics for a long time to come.
John Kamatani
San Mateo

Wow, Jon, we all had to put our sweaters on after reading your letter! We had no idea we were that cool. But seriously, thanks. We hope that both you and Shingo keep reading TRANSFORMERS and FANTASTIC FOUR, for a long time to come.

Dear Mike,
I thoroughly enjoyed TRANSFORMERS #13. It was totally awesome! I was wondering what had happened to Megatron, and you people definitely read my mind in making this issue. Megatron acted exactly the way I thought he would in such a situation. You handled it beautifully.
I sincerely hope that the comic will stay this good. It is a pleasure to read, and I eagerly anticipate the release of TRANSFORMERS #14. Thank you for a job well done. you have made one TRANSFORMERS fan very happy.
Milo Rogers
Vorhees, NJ

Hey, Shingo–does this meanMilo thinks we’re cool?

Dear Bob,
TRANSFORMERS 13# was great. you guys were sooo right about that being a really off-beat story. Megatron is my favorite character and I have been worrying about what was going on with him. Boy if I had Megatron as my servant, that would be great. He is the coolest Decepticon around.
On a different subject, though, I was wondering why there aren’t any female Transformers? hey, we’re in the eighties now, Bob. Male dominance is a thing of the past. Robots shouldn’t be any different from humans. you have me thinking that you guys are male chauvinist or something! Come on, guys, let’s have some female Autobots tangling with Megatron and Shockwave. Maybe you can even have a love interest for Optimus Prime! Please consider my suggestions. I think that you would really benefit from the addition of a Female Transformer.
JoAnn teen
Honolulu, HA

That settles it, Shingo, you’ve officially started a craze–even people in Hawaii think we’re cool! Our Transformers comic just might put Emerson Air conditioners out of business!
But seriously, JoAnn, you’ve got a point. there definitely seems to be a serious lack of femininity within the pages of TRANSFORMERS. But, in the near future, you will be seeing a female Autobot. It will not be in these pages thought, but in the upcoming TRANSFORMERS film (which Marvel just happens to be adopting in a three-issue limited series–so be on the lookout).

Dear Guys,
Words cannot describe how I feel about your TRANSFORMERS comic. TRANSFORMERS #14 is just another in a long line of great issues. I really love what Bob Budiansky is doing with the book. The art by Don Perlin is really impressive, too.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this issue of TRANSFORMERS. I like seeing the Autobots in human situations and watching how they deal with people. It was fun to have the Autobots at a gas station and at the gates of the concert arena. I often wonder how I would act if I heard a car talk but saw no driver. It’s kind of scary in a way! I also really enjoyed the plot of the Decepticons to take the sound from the concert to further their own evil ends. That was a good idea, Bob.
In upcoming issues, I would like to see more big fight scenes. Now don’t get me wrong, guys, it’s good to see character development once in a while, but to me, nothing beats some good combat between two giant robots. Listen, I want to see Optimus Prime bang some Decepticons heads. that really makes my day! Well, gotta run. Keep up the good work. I know you will!

Dear Bob and Mike,
I Just finished TRANSFORMERS #14. It was incredible. Right now, thought, I have a few questions for you.
1. Will Megatron become the Decepticon leader again? I sure hope so
2. Will we see the Aerialbots, Stunticons, and Omega Supreme?
3. Where is Circuit Breaker?
4. Will Optimus Prime always be the Autobot Commander?
5. Will TRANSFORMERS ever be a weekly comic?
6. Why don’t the Autobots prove to all of the nations that they are actually the good guys, and they are trying to help mankind fight the Decepticons?
Well, I just ran out of Questions. Thank you for listening.
George Hanson
Hallock, MN

Wow, that’s a lot of questions, George, but we’ll try and answer all of them:
1. Well, by this time you know the answer to this question.
2. They’re on the way, George, so keep your eyes open for ‘em.
3. She is not around right now, but you can be sure that the Transformers have not seen the last of her.
4. Until a more qualified Autobot comes along, Optimus Prime will remain in command. so far, there have been no complaints. Except, of course from the Decepticons.
5. What’re you tryin’ to do – KILL US?!
6. The Autobots have been trying to explain themselves to mankind for a while. Hopefully, mankind will eventually listen – we’re going to need all the help the Autobots can give!

Dear Mike,
I am a hardcore TRANSFORMERS fan. As such, I have every issue ever put out by you guys and I think that they are all great! As a renowned authority on TRANSFORMERS. I congratulate all of you. The story, the art, the personalities of each Transformer, everything is perfect. I hope that you bring in new characters soon like the Stunticons and Insecticons. that would really make me happy.
TRANSFORMERS #14 was great! I loved the fact that you added the Constructicons to the group. Well, keep up the spectacular work, guys, and as Optimus Prime would say, “May your luster never dull, and your wires never cross.”
Colin Braumiller
Orlando, FL

Wait a minute! We just realized something – if Shingo thinks we’re so cool, how come he didn’t write to us himself?! How about it, Shingo, we want to hear from you directly! Well- We’re waiting!

Issue 17 focuses on the Autobot, Blaster and the Transformers home world of Cyberton. If you have already read issue 10 you will have a slightly better understanding who this story ties in with the rest of the Transformers’ story up to this point. Now lets check out this wicked cover.

The cover of issue 17 is pretty intense. Unknown transformers, possibly just random inhabitants of Cyberton are shown with horrific expressions on their faces as they fight to stay alive within the “Smelting Pool”. Prominently featured up front is Blaster, an Autobot we have not been introduced to before. He is shown upside down and falling into the smelting pool. A look of horror across his fast as it appears he is experiencing his very last moments of life. In the far upper background of the cover are buildings. One of which is displaying a Decepticon logo with what appears to be several Decepticons watching the Transformers melt down below them as Blaster is free falling. The cover is colored in with red, orange, yellow, purple and white to convey how hot things are in this pool. Underneath and to the right of the white Transformers logo in a bright hello box which reads “MEANWHILE, BACK ON CYBERTRON…” On the left side of the cover written in bold orange reads, “INTO THE SMELTING POOL!”

Opening up on the Transformers’ home planet of Cybertron, Blaster, is waiting for his fellow Autobot, Scrounge. While he waits, Blaster is attacked by a Decepticon sweeping the area. Blaster makes short work of him, establishing himself, officially, as a badass.

So, while Blaster is waiting around for Scrounge and fighting off Deceptcons, Scrounge is breaking into a Decepticon base, Fortress Darkmount. Using the sensors attached to his special arm, Scourge records a transmission received by Shrapnel and other Decepticons, who claim it is of great importance. With the information gathered, Scourge attempts to leave the base, acidently trips an alarm. Scourge is captured just out side the base.

Blaster goes back to Autobase without Scourge and tries to convince his follow Autobots to help out with a search party. Base Commander Perceptor, argues that Scourge is not very reliable and that it would be a waste of resources to go looking for him. Perceptor finally agrees to allow the Autobots to look for Scrounge because his most of his fellow Autobots feel its what they should be doing.

Captured, Shrapnel escorts Scrounge to Decepticon commander Straxus. During a short Interrogation, Straxus destroys Scrounge’s special arm and orders that he be thrown into the smelting pool. The smelting pool is used to to melt down raw materials and Transformers and then uses the byproduct to aid in the Decepticons’ war effort.

Blaster. being a badass, again.

The Autobots start questioning the poor, fuel starved Empties, about scrounge’s disappearance. They learn of his capture by the Decepticons. All the Autobots, but blaster give up hope as he continues on alone with out their help. Blaster breaks into Darkmount, but is soon captured and brought before Straxus who orders his execution into the smelting pool.

In the hot pool, Blaster finds Scrounge, who is barely hanging on to life. Most of his body melted. Autobots arrive to save blaster, but Scrounge is do far gone to save. Before his death he is able to pass on the recording of the Decepticon message to Blaster just before he is pulled out of the smelting pool by a fellow Autobot.

After the escape, the Autobots listen to Scrounge’s recording and learn that Optimus Prime and the other Autobots are alive on Earth.

My Thoughts On Issue 17

Let me start with the cover art here. As cool as it is, I don’t know if I saw it on the news stand back in 1986 if I would be as captivated as the folks at Marvel hopped it would be.

This is the first appearance of Blaster in the comic books and he quickly establishes himself as a major Autobot badass when he takes out a Decepticon hunter in the first pages. If I where buying this comic as a kid in 1986 and had concerned of it sucking, my concerns would have been levitated with in the first few panels.

Nothing really jumped out at me art wise. The book is drawn well. Just, nothing jumped out at me as amazing. I did enjoy seeing several deceptions in the background that I recognized, but have not seen in the comic book before. The Insecticons would be a good example. Seeing Perceptor was also awesome. Though he comes off more like very direct and almost as cold and calculating as Soundwave.

A very solid story and our first real look at Cyberton since the first issue. Judging by some of the letters I read in the Transmission section of a few of the last comics, a story on Cyberton had been most requested. Its nice to see the powers at be over at Marvel listened to the fans.

Transmission Letters This Issue.

Dear Bob,
I thoroughly enjoyed TRANSFORMERS #12. I’m happy that Optimus Prime finally got his head back on his body. IO couldn’t wait until he started blasting some Decepticons again, especially Shockwave. I despise Shockwave!
I really like what Bob Budiansky is doing with this book. The characterizations of the Transformers, as well as the humans, are exceptionally good. I’m sorry to see Buster Witwicky give up the Creation Matrix, thought. I thought that he would have made a great Super Hero if he had kept his powers. I was thinking that maybe he could fight Circuit Breaker, or something.
Anyway, I’d also like to say that I think the art is really getting better on the book. Even though I have bought every issue of TRANSFORMERS, I was not too happy with the art at first. I must say, thought, that I really enjoy reading the book now knowing the art is finally in good hands.
I just can’t wait until next issue when I finally see what Megatron has been up to. He is my favorite Decepticon and I’ve wanted to see him again since he disappearance many months ago. I knew he wasn’t dead! When he returns, thought, please show him in more issues, OK?
Steve Marino
Bayside, NY

For you, Steve – anything!

Dear TRANSFORMERS crew,
I have just finished reading TRANSFORMERS #12, and I would like to say that I think it was really great. I mean, it’s about time that Optimus Prime got back into action. I was beginning to worry that his bodily circuits would atrophy. I really loved the way he trashed those Decepti-Rats at the end. The Big Op has been in a position of helpless inactivity for far too long.
I would also like to say that I think Buster Witwicky and Jessie are two great characters in the book. their involvement in the story and their relationship with each other – and the Autobots – add a lot of humanity and warmth to this giant robot story. no matter what else you do, Bob, please keep them in the story.
There is one thing that bothers me thought. I don’t see why Optimus Prime didn’t blast Shockwave when he had the chance. It would have only taken a second, and he still would have had time to rescue Buster. In any case, don’t do any sneaky Shockwave comebacks. that would annoy me since he sank like a rock when he fell in the swamp. Also, when will we learn what has happened on Cybertron? I want to know. In any case, your comic is fantastic. Keep up the great work!
David B. Mitchell
Berkeley, CA

Well, Dave, In this very issue you see what has become of Cybertron – and we’ll bet it’s not like anything you expected! As for Shockwave – did you think that we would ever bring shockwave back on the sly? Us? Would we do something like that? Davie – You cut us to the quick.

Dear Sir,
I have recently begun purchasing your TRANSFORMERS series. I began reading it with TRANSFORMERS #12 and I really enjoyed it. I collected the figures and watch the TV show also. I really want the first eleven issues, thought. I have to know how the story started. Is there any way that you can help me?
Jeff Lyczak
Morrisville, PA

Sorry, Jeff, but Marvel Comics does not sell back issues. In order to get back ISSUES of a certain comic, like TRANSFORMERS, you can either order them from the stores which advertise within these comics, or you can consult your local yellow Pages for the comic shops in your area. We;re sure they would be happy to help you out.

Dear Marvel,
I have been collecting TRANSFORMERS figures since they where created and I have also collected the comic since it began. I enjoy both of them greatly. TRANSFORMERS #12 is another great issue from you guys at Marvel. I’m glad to see Optimus with his head back, again! I think Bob is doing a great job on TRANSFORMERS, but I wish that I could see more of my favorite character, Jetfire. I figure now that Optimus Prime has the Creation Matrix again, he’ll be able to give Jetfire a mind of his own. That would really make me happy.
the only thing that would make me even happier would be to see a special comic devoted to all of the TRANSFORMERS individually, a TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE if you will. That would set me up for life. Well, goodbye and keep up the good work!
Tony Simms
Hanover, NH

What, huh, did you say that a TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE book would really make you happy, Tony? Well, more than a few readers have shown interest in just that type of book. Read on…

Dear Sirs,
I have been collecting TRANSFORMERS since the beginning and I was wondering if you planned to do a special issue describing the new Transformers. If not, I think it would be a great idea to make a special issue describing all new and old TRANSFORMERS in different categories. The Dinobots, Constructicons, and Decepticons should be in it, too.
Thomas Lucker
Cheektowaga, NY

Dear Marvel,
I have been a TRANSFORMERS freak ever since I bought the first comic and figure. I personally think that they’re great and I hope they continue being made forever.
One question that I have been meaning to ask, though, is do you plan to release something which shows all of the TRANSFORMERS and their abilities? I would really like to see something like that in the near future.
Ken Hayes
Kamloops, BC Canada

Dear Guys,
… Hey, how about a comic like the MARVEL UNIVERSE except for TRANSFORMERS. That would really make my day, maybe even my year!
Lewis Long
Vorhees, NJ

Many of you have written letters requesting that we create a book about TRANSFORMERS in the same format as our MARVEL UNIVERSE, so we decided that it would be a good idea to make an OFFICIAL TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE. we drafted a top editor for the book; namely Bob Harras. He is a pretty big name around here right now. Not only does he edit the Marvel titles X-FACTOR and the INCREDIBLE HULK, he has also written critically acclaimed stories in the pages of THOR, IRON MAN ANNUAL #7 and he is now working on the SHIELD Limited Series.
The TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE isn’t scheduled to be on the stands for many months yet, but we’ve been getting so much mail suggesting it, we’ll be sure to be the first to announce its completion! (With any luck, we hope to preview some of the TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE art work on this letters page very soon.) What do you think? Let’s keep hearing from you!
THE OFFICIAL TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE is not the only project being worked on for TRANSFORMERS, Though. We thought you might be interested in yet another project being worked on at the present time – a full length animated TRANSFORMERS film! Yes, for the first time you will be able to see all of your favorite characters on the big screen. We are all anxiously waiting the motion picture epic, and you’ll do well to watch this letter column in the future months for more information concerning the film.

This week, I will give that a shot. At the end of the synopsis, I will give my thoughts of this issue. I would love to hear your feed back on this and if you all think I should keep it up. Thanks for checking out my post!

In this issue, Bumblebee feels like he is more of a burden then a help to the Autobots and runs away from home. Issue 16 shows Bumblebee, that he is important, but along the way of discovering this the Decepticons try to attack him and use him as a Trojan horse against the Autobots. Before I get into the story lets check out the cover.

The mostly purple cover with the Transformers logo in blue at the top depicts a scene of Bumblebee being attacked. Several aerial Decepticons, including Shockwave and Laserbeak open fire upon Bumblebee as two humans flee from underneath him. “BUMBLEBEE’S LAST STAND” is written in bold and in a lighter shade of purple so that it pops. This cover clearly is teasing the possible death of this beloved character.

The center of the story behind issue 16 is a Decepticon plan by Shockwave to install a device in Bumblebbe that will allow the Decepticons to control him. They believe they have the best chance to do this with Bumblebee because he is the weakest of all the Autobots.

Outside the ark, Bumblebee is feeling sorry for himself because of how useless he felt during the Autobots last battle. He decides it would be better for the Autobotos if he was less of a burden to them and ran away from home.

While driving away, Bumblebee is located by Laserbeak. The Decepticon alerts his comrades who attack. Bumblebee takes on damage, but still manages to evade the group of flying Decepticons by hiding in plain site inside of a car lot.

Inside the Autobot’s Ark, the Autobots watch the attack on Bumblebee happen on Television. Fearing for their friend’s safety the Autobots roll out to rescue their friend.

That evening a two men, Waldo Dobbs and Ernest, sneak into the car lot and hijack the Yellow Volkswagen known as Bumblebee. Bumblebee, goes along with the two men and finds himself enjoying showing off his driving abilities. Eventually the damage that Bumblebee suffered earlier catches up with him and the Volkswagen stalls out. One of the men tries to repair the vehicle which results in Bumblebee being restored to full operational power. Doing this also alerts the Decepticons, who attack Bumblebee once again.

Bumblebee is ready to make his last stand against the Decepticons to protect his new human friends. Jetfire arrives to distract the Decepticons, but is quickly shot down. Bumblebee is left in a hot spot of trying to save Jetfire or save his human friends who are underneath a collapsing overpass.

Optimus Prime and the other Autbots arrive in time to scare off the Decepticons from their attack. The comic book ends with Bumblebee realizing that he belongs with the Autobots and is an important member of the team.

My Thoughts On Issue 16

Yup, you’re over reacting buddy.

Issue 16 was a very fast read. I think out of all 16 issues I have read up to this point, this issue read the fastest. The idea that Bumblebee feels worthless and runs away from his home comes off as forced and cheesy. I mean, you have a bunch of Autobots who have been fighting this war forever, right? Then, all of a sudden, one of them starts throwing a pity party for himself and runs away from home. It just feels forced.

I am not saying that this is a bad issue. Far from it actually. It just starts off week. I think it is important to remember that these stories where written in the 80s and for kids. If I look at the issue through kids eyes, I can totally accept the whole story very easily.

I found myself at the end of the story actually worried if the Autobots would catch up to Bumblebee in time to save him. I experienced a great comic book moment that caught me totally by surprise. That was when Jetfire swooped in at the last moment to save Bumblebee. Then, shortly after the rest of the Autobots joined in. It was really cool and I love those hold-your-breath moments.

Wire-frame Image

As far as the art goes with this issue, the cover is nothing special to me. On the first page it looks like art was uses from the Bumblebee toy to show a wire frame version of him on a computer screen. There are of couple of panels I thought where very well drawn including the Autobots watching TV and when the Autobots appear to save Bumblebee.

The cover of issue 15 is a comic book cover on a comic book cover. The comic is black with a white and blue Transformers logo at the top. The cover depicts another comic on the cover called ‘Robot Master’ with Megatron, Bumblebee, Soundwave and several other Transformers in the background. At the bottom is the Robot Master himself, Donny Finkleberg. On the left side of the comic reads in bold black lettering “THE MAN BEHIND THE MACHINES!”

In this issue Megatron is scowering across the land looking for fuel. Eventually his body powers down in a Wyoming Coal mine like some great statue. His mind the only thing still functioning.

The Intelligence and Information Institute (I.I.I.) searches for a way to explain the Transformers tot he public that will be calming and prevent a wide spread panic. In a I.I.I.’s meeting to discuss options, G.B. Blackrock tries and fails to convince the governmental agency that the Autobots are earth’s friends and the Decepticons are everyone’s enemy. At the end of the agency’s meeting everyone is sent home to come up with an explainable cover story and not to return without some ideas.

Walter Barnett, a Triple I agent trying to come up with a cover story finds one while flipping through a copy of his son’s comic book, Robot-Master. Walter flies out to Marvel Comics’ head quarters to meet Robot Master’s Writer, Donny Finkleberg who has just lost his job. Walter takes Donny out to lunch where Walter discusses bringing Robot Master to life. Donny accepts the job offer.

On TV the next day the whole country’s Television programs are interrupted by Donny Finkleberg dressed up like Robot Master. He states that all the Transformers are under his control. The Autobots who see this are confused and ask G.B Blackrock for help understanding what is going on.

The following day a second broadcast shot at the Wyoming Coal mine uses a disable Megatron for Robot Master’s backdrop. This time the broadcast not only catches the attention of the Autobots but also the Decepticon, Soundwave. He goes out to find Megatron and refuel him. The Autobots know that Megatron could still pose a threat so they Transform and roll out. This is the first issue to have Optimus Prime actually utter the phrase “Transform and roll out”.

The Autobots arrive at the Wyoming coal mine, but the human military reacts negativity to their presence. They don’t seem to understand the difference between Autobots and Decepticons. Soundwave, Laserbeak and Ravage arrive at the mine with fuel for Megatron. Once consumed he becomes active again. The four Decepticons start destroying everything around them and the Autobots are to damaged by the human military to help stop them. So, they retreat.

Megatron wants to kill the “Robot-Master” for claiming control over him during the TV broadcasts. But Donny Finkleberg convinces Megatron that continuing to tell the humans that the Autobots are as much of a threat to the them as the Decepticons on TV, the Autobots’ effort might continue to be stopped. Finkleberg’s life is spared for the time being.

No letters to Marvel in this issue.

Recently I was contacted by Brennan from Texas. He sent me a picture of his new comic book wall using the directions from my IKEA comic book hack. Brennan had the following story to share with us about this comics and his new comic book wall.

After most of my comics got destroyed in a flood about 6-7 years ago, I stopped collecting. But my parents found a box of stuff I stashed away in their garage and it turned out, most of my favorite issues and cover art were inside. Growing up, I was a bigger fan of the B-list Marvel heroes, guys like Dr. Strange, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Black Panther and Black Knight. So naturally, I wanted a relatively inexpensive way to display them. After doing a little online research, I came across Youseph’s site and liked the results I saw.

There’s an IKEA near where my folks live in Dallas and I bought 16 frames for under $40.00, picked up some black card stock at the Hobby Lobby and some Command Picture Hanging Strips, so that there wouldn’t be any damage to my walls. I chose 16 of my favorite covers from the 40 or so books I had left in my long box and my girlfriend helped me hang them up in the office.

She loves them, I love them. The result was perfect. Now we’re thinking about hanging up 16 more in another part of the house! If it wasn’t for Youseph’s site, we’d have probably spent a lot more money. Thanks for the smart and effective tip!

If you have a comic book wall using the IKEA hack found here, please contact me. I would love to see how it turned out for you.

Back when I started my reviews of the original Transformers comic books, I wanted to do something different then what I was seeing on other web sites. I decided one thing I could do differently was post the letters kids wrote to Marvel about the comic books. At the time these where called, TransMissions.

As I sat copying these letters from each comic book into my post I couldn’t help but think how cool it would be if one of the kids who wrote these letters so many years ago found my post and tried to contacted me about it. Well that very thing happened to me just recently.

Jeb Hoge, was one of those kids who wrote into Marvel Comics back in the 80s. On my review of Transformers issue 5, Jeb wrote in to me and commented:

Cracked me up! I was using Google to look for some old things I’d published online and saw my name show up here. Yes. I did write that letter to the editor in 1985. Never thought I’d run across it here. :-) And I think I still have this issue.

Marvels Comics’ Transformers Issue #5: The New Order

Praising Marvel on Transformers, Jeb’s original letter from the 1980s read:

Dear Marvel, I would like to compliment you on TRANSFORMERS. I have two of them and they are terrific! Hats off to you! – Jeb Hoge, Tullahoma, TN

Communicating with Jeb since he contacted me about the post, he recalled how excited he was to see his letter printed in issue 5 of the Transformers comic. The cover of issue 5 is so iconic now, I can’t think of a better issue to have your letter published in.

Jeb was kind enough to do a quick interview with me about the Transformers comic book, his life since he wrote that letter and if he is still a Transformers fan today.

Youseph: How did you discover the Transformers?

Jeb: I was born in 1974, so that put me right in the target market when Transformers first came out. I’m not sure if I found the toys or the cartoon first, but I do remember having to go to a friend’s house to watch the cartoon. I also had the first four TF comic books, and then the fifth. I’d say Transformers were in my top three of all toys, along with Lego (naturally) and GI Joe.

Youseph: Where did you get your Transformers comics from?

Jeb: I first started getting comic books at a local drugstore that just happened to have them. My favorite was “GI Joe,” which started up right around when I was just old enough to get into comics and “big kid toys,” but when “Transformers” hit the racks, I started buying them too. Later, I found a proper comic book store in town that was fun, but I never got hugely invested into comic books as a medium.

Youseph: You found my website because I republished a letter you wrote to Marvel about the Transformers comic. What compelled you to write to them? What was it like to see your letter printed in the back of the comic?

Jeb: The letter I wrote to Marvel was just the kind of thing that an excited, avid comic book reader did at the time. I’m sure my mom encouraged me to write it, too, but you’d never expect to get it published. So when I saw my name in Issue #5, it made my year. I showed it off to everyone, I think.

Youseph: Who are you today and are you still a Transformers fan?

Two of them are old enough to be Transformers fans too! They watch the original cartoon series thanks to Netflix streaming. I wish I had the old toys to share with them, but those are long gone. I do tell stories about when I had them and how I played with them, so it’s a really nice connection between my kids and my kid-at-heart self. My oldest has even gone online to look at pictures of the original series of TF toys and I’ve given thought to seeing what they go for on eBay, just to surprise him with an old-school Soundwave (“See, son, they used to have these things called ‘Walkmans’…”). Sometimes I get quizzed on different Transformers’ abilities, but mostly they just like them for what they are, and that’s good enough.

As for what I do, I’m a technical writer in Richmond, VA. That’s not terribly interesting, though. :-)

Thank you Jeb, for taking the time to do this interview with me. It was a pleasure to meet you. I hope I get to hear from more of you out there who may have written into Marvel back in the day.

I can’t help but think that the person or persons behind the story in Transformers issue 14 are Bruce Springsteen fans. I say this because one of the characters is a rock star named Brick Springhorn, or Brick Springstern if you’re sharp enough to notice the spelling change/error. It also seems like a lot of the songs this rock star sings in this issue sound a lot like Springsteen hits. Songs like, ”Dancing in the Night” “Born to Ride” “Born in America” and “Margarita (Jump a Little Lighter)“. With issue 14 we pick up shortly after the last battle of issue 12 and introduce a handful of new Autobots to the mix. Things get hairy when the new Autobots encounter Decepticons on what is supposed to be a simple training exercises to get them accustom to earth. But first, lets check out this cover art.

Transforms Issue 14 Cover

The Transformers logo is blue with a purple border and a purple Autobot logo. The white sky background allows for the rest of the images on the page to pop out at you. Hoist, is center stage (pun intended) holding up some damage scaffolding to protect Brick Springhorn and his band. The audience below the stage looks on in awe and confusion. An unidentified jet fires at hoist in the background

The comic opens up with a full page display of Jetfire getting branded with the Autobot insignia. Optimus Prime brought Jetfire to life and with the “Right of the Autobrand” he becomes one of the newest members of the Autobots.

In this issue Optimus Prime says something very profound that I think is worth quoting here.

“By commanding, it is I who serve. For that is what the other Autobots ask of me. If ever they should want me to step down, I will. If ever you want to leave, you may. That is the right of every Autobot.”

I think that really does a great job of explaining to the reader who Optimus Prime is and what the Autobots are all about.

Optimus Prime gives Jetfire a tour of his new home within the Ark. They walk into Ratchet’s medical bay where he struggles to repair several Autobots who where damaged in issue 12. In another part of the Ark five new Transformers have been constructed. Loaded up in their minds are the memories of five Autobot warriors. Minds that where copied and saved before the Autobots left Cybertron. Optimus Prime welcomes the old Autobots in their new forms. Their names are Grapple, Hoist, Smokescreen, Skids, and Tracks.

Optimus Prime sends out Hoist, Smokescreen, Skids, and Tacks with Bumblebee to get acclimated with their new surroundings. He holds Grapple back for him to be involved in another project. While they are out in the world the Autobots test out a new disguise installed by Wheeljack. They now have a new facsimile circuitry that covers up their Autobot symbols and places a mannequin in the driver seat.

Back on the Blackrock Oil-drilling platform Shockwave returns. He quickly stops Starscream’s complaining about Decepticon leadership and proceeds to show off a new power siphon he has built. Shockwave can use the device to turn the oil from the platform into energon cubes. With the power siphon the Decepticons leave the oil platform detonating one of the energon cubes in front of the surrounding naval fleet allowing them to fly off with out being attacked.

5 cars only cost $82.40 to fill up!!! I miss the 80s.

The Oil Platform has been bugged by the humans. They hear all about the Decepticons’s plans to steal a large release of sonic energy. The Autobots are alerted by G.B. Blackrock.

During a refueling at one of Blackrock’s many gas stations, Bumble and crew learn about an upcoming rock concert. They start to think this might be where the Decepticons will attack and head out to gather information while Optimus Prime heads out to the concert bringing reinforcements.

At the concert, Bumblebee and the other Autobots observe a sonic disruption during the show. They are under orders from Optimus Prime not to take any action until he and his reinforcements arrive. But the disruption device is causing problems for the show and the Autobots choose to act against orders. They get the sound of the show back to normal which causes several Decepticons jets to burst out from the ground.

The Autobots defend the people at the concert as gun fire breaks out. The Decepticon jets are fought off. Hoist repairs the stage from the attack. Bumblebee discovers Shockwave’s new power siphon and is able to use energon cubs to fight off shockwave. The crowd looks at the amazing display of fire power and think it is part of the concert. The Decepticons flee and the Autobots go back to hiding behind the concert.

While heading back to the Ark, Bumblebee and his team meet up with Optimus Prime and his reinforcements. He expects to be punished for not following orders. Prime, being impressed with his team’s performance does not punish Bumblebee.

Letters to Marvel called TransMissions.

In several of the issues of Transformers they reprinted fan letters and sometimes answered them. These are the letters that where printed up in issue 14.

Photo of Transmissions from Transformers issue 14

Dear Bob,
Issue 9 was great! Circuit Breaker is one of my favorite characters in TRANSFORMERS so far. I admire her determination to come back from an attack by the Decipticons and still want to fight them. She should stop hating the Autobots and join them. She would be a perfect member and a great asset to the group.
Mike Manley and M. Hands make a great art team!! I hope they will be doing more issues soon. I like Shockwave as leader of the Decepticons. I liked Megatron, but I think that Shockwave is a better leader.
Until Megatron becomes and Autobot, MAKE MINE MARVEL!! – M. Rockowitz, Elmhurst, NY

Dear Marvel,
I hae all the TRANSFORMERS comics. I think they are the best comics put out by Marvel. In issue #9 you introduced Circuit Breaker. Her last words where: “But the next time we meet, I’m on my own, and nothing you say will stop me!” Issue #10 did not show her but I’m anxiously awaiting her reappearance. She would be a great challenge for Jetfire. – William Crowson, A Transformers Fan

Circuit Breaker hasn’t returned yet, William, But you can be sure that she will be back soon – even though we don’t think any of the Transformers are anxiously awaiting her return.

Dear Transformers,
I think you guys are doing a great job with the TRANSFORMERS! I have issue 1 through 10 and I love them all! My Favorite characters are Optimus Prime and Jetfire. I hope to see more of Jetfire in future issues. I hope we also get to see all the newer Transformers! Well, thanks for your time and keep up the good work!!! – John Lisidki, Port Reading, NJ

Dear Marvel,
Issue 10 of Transformers was great. The cover was sensational. I have a couple of requests, though. Put Optimus Prime’s head back on his body and bring Megatron back as leader…if he is still alive! Stephen D. Perkins, Cordele, GA

Dear Marvel,
First, I would like to say a few words about TRANSFORMERS – Superb, stupendous, and great, too. I’ve just read TRANSFORMERS #10 and it was fantastic, but I have a few questions.
1. Is Megatron dead?
2. Will Jetfire become an Autobot?
3. Where are the Triple Changers, Omega Supreme, and Perceptor?
You better put them in this book or i might hurt someone. – Alex Nicoll, Bloomington, IN

Thank you for your kind words about TRANSFORMERS. We’re glad you like it! The last few issues have answered some of your questions – Megatron is very much alive and Jetfire is now an Autobot. As for your final questions – well, stick around for the next few issues and you’ll find what you’ve been looking for. That’s a promise! After all, we wouldn’t want any one to get hurt!

Dear Transformers,
I just finished reading TRANSFORMERS #10 and was disappointed to see Prime’s powers used that way! Also, please bring Megatron back and reinstate him as leader of the Decepticons. Shockwae is boring with his logic. Is there an Autobot assault coming up? With Blackrock’s fuel and Prols leadership, an attack might be successful.
One last thing, repair Sunstreaker and switch J to Autobot status like in the show (which I love).
Good Luck to Optimus Prime. – Joe Toscano, Jersey City, NJ

Thanks for your support Joe. Optimus Prime wasn’t too happy about his powers being used in such a way either, but now he’s back in charge – thanks to some help from the other Autobots! As for Megatron, let’s just say that he seems to have the Shockwave situation well in had.

Dear Autobots,
Issue #11 was incredible! Jetfire is my favorite Transformer. Why isn’t he an Autobot? He’s so cool! Maybe if Optimus gets his head back (and he’d better), he will make Jetfire into one.
The creative team on this book is amazing! Herb Trimpe/Tom Palmer are my favorite artists that have been on this book so far. I hope they stay.
One more thing, bring back Megatron! He’s the Jinkiest!
Well, Gotta roll – THE CHED, Co-op City, NY

It’s good to know that you like the book, Ched, Jetfire likes it better as an Autobot, also. We’re glad you like the team of Herb Trimpe/Tom Palmer. They did a fine job filling in on issue #11. We’re sure you’ll enjoy the new creative team of Don Perlin and Al Gorden just as much. Tell us what you think of the new team, readers, we want to hear from you.

Dear Marvel,
I have just read Transformers #10. I liked it a lot! I was thinking that it would be a good idea if you made a comic where the Transformers go back to Cybertron. This would be a good idea because you would then be able to introduce a lot of new Transformers. Will the Transformers go back to Cybertron????? – David Gulick, Hackett, AR

That is an interesting question, David. As a matter of fact, you will again see the homeworld of the Autobots and Decepticons in upcoming issues. These “Return to Cybertron” stories will introduce a lot of new Transormers like… oh, you’ll just have to wait a little while and see for yourself. We wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise, now would we…?

Dear Transformers,
Do you read every letter? If so how? Your comic has millions of fans!! Keep up the good work! – Michael Trzaskowski, Parma Heights,OH

Yup — we read every letter, Michael, because it’s nice to see that all of the work put into this issue is appreciated by you and everyone else who takes time to write us. Keep those letters coming!!!

Issue 13 was quite an interesting read. A real change form the stories I have been reading in the first twelve issues of the Transformers comic. The story is about a small time crook named Joey Slick and Megatron who makes his return in this issue. But before I get started with my review lets talk about the cover art.

The cover for Transformers issue 13 features Megatron in his realistic gun mode taking up most of the cover. He is being held by, one can assume Joey Slick. The bottom of the cover is littered with tattered buildings, tanks and people with a bright yellow sky above them. The Transformers logo at the top of the page is orange color while ‘The Menace of Megatron’ sits on the lower right corner of the cover in bold white letters.

Transformers Issue 13 Cover

The comic book opens up on Joey Slick, a small time crook who is running through the woods trying to escape some mafia henchmen who are trying to gun him down. Joey Slick discovers a gun in a stream and tries to use it to defend himself, but the gun does not work. That is, it doesn’t work until the two Laughing mafia henchmen tell it to blast them. Which it does.

Free of the henchmen, Joey finds safety in an empty warehouse and discovers that his new gun is in fact a Transformer calling it’s self Megatron. Due to damage withstood from a fall in a previous issue, Megatron is unable to think for himself. He now responds to what he is told or ask to do.

Jake Lomax, the mafia crime lord becomes enraged when he learns that his Henchmen failed to to collect on Joey Slicks unpaid debt to him. He orders the henchmen to killed Slick immediately.

While returning to his run down apartment in an old neighborhood, Joey Slick is greeted by just about everyone on the street. People who he knows for one reason or another. People who all see the best in Joey, but Joey himself only see failure. In his apartment Joey is attacked again by the henchmen. With Megatron in gun mode he is able to escape, but needing money he robs a convenience store and again uses Megatron to stop police who chase after him. By this point Joey is started to see the possibilities of this gun and soon uses Megatron to start a crime spree.

Soon after Joey’s realization we see him as a rich man and surrounded by mooches. Feeling sadder and more alone then ever, Joey returns to his old neighborhood to reconnect with his past. What he finds are old friends scared by his new gun. He comes to the understanding that he has man up and face his problems.

Joey goes to Lomax’s compound and confronts the mafia crime lord. Lomax starts to begs for his life. Joey tosses his gun away and punches Lomax out. Joey then throws the money he has owed Lomax on his unconscious body. While turning to walk away he finds Megatron towering over him. The impact from having tossed the gun away has reconnected Megatron’s higher level brain functions. Joey tries to command Megatron like he has done in the past, but this angers Megatron as he attempts to kill the fleshling. Joey shows no fear at this which impresses Megatron enough to spare his life.

The comic book ends with Megatron leaving to rejoin the Decepticons and Joey Slick willingly being arrested by the police.

Being a Transformers fan and living in Juneau, Alaska is not easy. For starters, Juneau does not have a single comic book store. The geography around here is such that you can’t simply drive to a neighboring town to find one either. This makes it very difficult for me to get my hands on fresh comics.

I have been able to strike a deal with a nice little comic book shop in Bellingham, Washington called The Comics Place. These guys have been kind enough to hold issues of IDW’s ‘Transformers: Regeneration One’ (and soon the new X-Files comic) and ship them to me.

Recently, a local group of artists calling themselves Alaska Robotics, opened up a graphic novel and art gallery shop in down town Juneau. A good portion of this store is dedicated to graphic novels from DC, Marvel, Image, and IDW. When they first opened up, I asked one of the shop owners if they would be able to carry the Transformers books that IDW Publishing had been putting out. Alaska Robotics was all to happy to oblige me. I now visit their downtown store every Saturday to pick up the latest Transformers books that have come in. This includes the US and UK Transformers Classics, The new Transformers: Regeneration One Volume 1 and several books from Transformers: The IDW Collections.

On the afternoon of Saturday, April 13th, I was going through my RSS feeds when I happened upon a post from Seibertron.com titled: IDW Limited Collection Contest plus bonus prize for Seibertron.com members. The post on Seibertron told me about a contest that IDW Limited was holding for Transformers fans on Twitter.

The IDW Limited Twitter account has just posted a surprise contest for the upcoming weekend. All you have to do to enter is take a photo of your Transformers collection (toys, comics, bed sheets, whatever you’ve got) and tweet it to their account, for a chance to win some free IDW Transformers goodies!

The post went on to say that if you win the contest and are already a member of Seibertron.com (I am) you will also win a hardcover copy of “The Art of Transformers” book.

Some Awesome ‘Beast Wars The Gathering’ comics. 1-4

As a big time Transformers fan, I just had to give this a shot. I took to twitter and searched up the hash tag #IDWLTD which the Seibertron post said to use with your photo submissions. Right away my twitter window filled up with posts from people who already had a day head start on me submitting pictures. I clicked on a few of the submitted pics to see what others had been submitting. What I saw were living rooms, bedrooms, bookshelves, closets, and tables just packed with Transformer collections of true fans. Collections that made my personal collection of Transformers seem small and insignificant. Still, I felt I had to try and enter this contest. I mean, whats the worst that could happen?

Right off the bat, I noticed one thing about the pictures I was seeing on twitter. No one was including themselves in any of the photos they where submitting. I figured that was something I could do that would be different and maybe eye catching to the folks behind IDW Limited.

Spotlight Megatron Comic

Back in February, I started posting reviews on my blog of the original 1980s Marvel Transformers comic books. Starting with Issue 1, I would take pictures of myself holding the comics and just trying my best to look cool while doing it. Along with my reviews, I would include pictures of the ads and write up any letters that fans wrote in about the comic book at the time. These where two things I didn’t see in any of the other Transformers comic book reviews I had read. So, I figured I would start by Tweeting to @IDWltd a picture of me holding issue 1 of Transformers. I followed that with a picture I took of my book shelf and my collection of Transformers books from IDW. Most of which, I bought from Alaska Robotics here in town. From that point on I just kept submitting pictures of myself holding up Transformers comics until I ran out of time late Sunday night. I had to stop for Game of Thrones you see.

The Art of IDW’s Transformers

The next day, I was at work when my phone alerted me to a tweet from @IDWltd.

“We have another winner! He sent us 2 dozen poses.Youseph, you’re awesome! @YousephTanha: Shockwave is scary. #IDWltdpic.twitter.com/1ImDVrdb0T“

I was so excited when I saw this, I could hardly stay in my chair. I replayed back right away thanking IDW for picking me. About a day later I got another tweet from IDW Limited with a tracking number of my prize.

Runabout by Guido

It took thirteen days but the package made it. It was a long wait, but more than worth it. These guys really sent some amazing stuff. The first thing I noticed in the box was an IDW bookmark. It looks really cool. They also sent me the first four issues of ‘Transformers Beast Wars: The Gathering’. They also sent ‘Transformers Spotlight: Megatron’ comic. There was a hard back book called ‘The Art of IDW’s Transformers: Signed Edition’ that was not signed and for some reason I found that very funny. The book is amazing though. Well constructed and the art inside by all the amazing artists was literally breath taking. Finally there was a drawing of Decepticon, Runabout signed by the artist, Guido Guidi.

I want to thank all the folks at IDW Limited for doing this great contest and for picking me as one of their winners. Being lucky enough to have been one of the winners of this contest has made it a little bit easier for me to be a Transformers fan in Juneau, Alaska. I not only have some great comics and art to enjoy, but I have met some cool Transformers fans from twitter.
